Eastern Canada endures severe extremes of weather in an average year, from bitterly cold winters to hot and humid summers. This climate presents unique challenges for the municipalities within this region who must ensure that daily life can continue safely regardless of the weather conditions.
However, sometimes things go wrong despite their efforts: people may slip and fall on icy sidewalks or sewers may become blocked leading to damaged properties. In these instances the municipality is often liable to compensate the injured party. CFC's CGL & PI product protects the municipality against large compensation payouts that could eat into its funds and prevent it from delivering its range of services to the population that so depends on them.
Coverage
The costs of handling the defence of a claim, plus any compensation payouts including the claimant's legal costs, as a result of:
- Injury to a third party, including libel and slander, trespass and false arrest
- Damage to third party property
- A negligent act, error or omission in the administration of the municipality which causes a financial loss to a third party
- Damage caused by the municipality to a property it is renting
- Liability arising out of the municipality's police force
(This is only a summary of the policy; reference should be made to the full policy wording).
